Cycling in the Netherlands is very different from cycling abroad. Because it is so common here in the Netherlands, cars and people know to watch out for their bicycles, and even give them right of way. There are roads, cycle paths and sidewalks where each group (cars, bicycles, pedestrians) stays in its own area, but you still have to be careful.<\/p>\n

Cyclists do not wear helmets, so indicate when you are going to make a turn and keep a close eye on traffic lights. Stay on the indicated path. If there is a “bicycle path” sign or a picture of a bicycle on the path, you are in the right place. If you are in a pedestrian zone, get off your bike and walk up the path.<\/p>\n

The same goes for when you need to find out where you are or confirm your route. Get off your bike and get out of traffic before burying your face in the map. In Amsterdam, the police will give you a ticket for breaking the traffic rules, so be aware of where you are driving. Most cycling cues are universal, so just extend your arm in the direction you’re turning and you’re good to go.<\/p>\n

Before crossing tram tracks, make sure not only that you look both ways, but also that your wheels are perpendicular to the tracks so that your tire doesn’t get stuck in a track.<\/p>\n

Always lock your bike! Bicycles are constantly stolen, so make sure you lock them in a designated place. Rental bicycles are delivered to us with a lock that is permanently attached.<\/p>\n
